So you broke the winding up into 6 bobbins/spools to distribute the
voltage stress. Were they some sort of off the shelf thing?
What's the overall size (forgive me if there was an image with a scale
in it, I've not looked at them all yet) and the core cross section?
I built each of the coilforms and also wound wound them - that was a lot
of work. I also did some calculations before for the needed number of
turns, to get the desired inductance and also current capability with
that given core - I never had any problems with saturation. The core was
an old 3-phase transformer from the scrapyard with an EI - core. I
disassembled this transformer and cut of the middle leg. Then I
reassembled it as UI - core to get enough space for the coils and the
air gap. The dimensions of the core are 7,9 x 7,9 inches (outside), the
core cross section is 2,95 x 1,97 inches. By the way, the insulators on
the bottom are not really necessary, there is no problem if the core
would be on ground potential. The insulation between the coils and the
core itself is more than enough but I wanted to go for sure.
