Whoa! That coud have resulted in a potential law suit, not to mention some really bad PR for the coiling community! I'm sure glad it didn't. Although I often use July 4th as a good excuse to "make even more noise" with my large Tesla coil, I suppose the liability of firing off a potentially deadly machine in my front driveway when there are groups of youngsters coming up and down my driveway has kind of scared me away from firing mine on Halloween. I own a nice sized piece of land (40 acres) in a quite rural setting some 85 miles from my current residence, but no permanent structure for residing (or coiling) on this land yet. So for now, in my current suburban setting, I pretty much only roll out the beast onto my driveway to fire off when I get a set date for an audience of adults (or maybe teenagers) who wish to see it in action.

I run my coil outdoors most Halloween's. One year this 12yo kid showed up dressed as a doctor and carrying a large piece of X-Ray film. He showed me the X-Ray as he got his candy and I did the usual very cute, thank you, etc. After the other kids walked away he said look closely at the X-Ray. I did and saw an obvious broken arm (Radius and Ulna) and said that must have hurt. He then said look closer at the date! It was from Halloween the year before. He told me my Tesla Coil had scared him and as he ran he tripped over a friend badly breaking his arm. The good news is he learned all about Tesla and Tesla Coils during his recuperation and thanked me for inspiring him to dig deeper into science.
