Hi Jan,Richie Burnett's resonant charging text is well worth the study, and also has resulted in a procedure for the design of such a system: the AC resonant charging calculator (RCC), which was not published as a finished program by Richie, before leaving the list. A more detailed outline of the method was also given by Ritchie on this pupman list; see the following link:
https://www.pupman.com/listarchives/2001/June/msg00679.htmlI have transformed the procedure into an Excel spreadsheet, which I can make available to you off-list if you like (email me to k.schraner@xxxxxxxxxxx). I've successfully designed several STR resonant TC's of higher power, using the procedure. Some pics of my own bigger coil "Black & White" can be seen on i.e. http://home.datacomm.ch/k.schraner/b_and_w.htm

There is a readable copy of Richie Burnetts text on resonant charging on the hvtesla-site. I was very interested at first, but I wonder if a LC circuit where all the energy is dumped out of the condensor on each cycle when the gap fires, really could be interpreted as a resonant system. It would be a very lossy and low Q one, in that case.
Perhaps resonant charging is just a more complicated way of stating that there is a balance between how fast the ballast allows the condensor to be charged, and how often the charge is taken out? In that sense there might be an optimum ballast value for a certain condenser and brake rate.
