Thanks for valuable input, I will stop worrying about secondary losses in this instant and use an asynchronous gap with simple variac control. And I will varnish the secondary... There is a readable copy of Richie Burnetts text on resonant charging on the hvtesla-site. I was very interested at first, but I wonder if a LC circuit where all the energy is dumped out of the condensor on each cycle when the gap fires, really could be interpreted as a resonant system. It would be a very lossy and low Q one, in that case. Perhaps resonant charging is just a more complicated way of stating that there is a balance between how fast the ballast allows the condensor to be charged, and how often the charge is taken out? In that sense there might be an optimum ballast value for a certain condenser and brake rate.
