Steve, I could not get number 8 magnet wire and it would have been harder to actually wind a coil with wire that large so I got a 10 pound spool of number 14 wire, I divided it into three equal coils and wound all three in parallel on to a bobbin. So I ended up with one conductor of three wires in parallel for about 118 effective turns, I had calculated I would have 126 turns but it did not work out that way when I ran out of wire on one of the three supply spools. When I tested the ballast I started with the I lamination's in contact with the E lamination's with no air gap. If I remember the current was around 18 or 20 amps. As I increased the air gap the current when up as I kept adding more shim, I used thin plywood and plastic, until i got to 42 amps. I have not actually measured the final thickness of the shim but it close to 0.700 inches. The testing was done by driving the pole transformer with the variacs and the ballast in series and shorting the high side of the transformer. Later I used the transformer to drive a 10 foot travelling arc and you could watch the voltage and current fluctuate as the arc started and stopped. That is consistent with the information in Richie Burnetts web site. He has a section on inductive ballasting that includes charts of current vs air gap that show the current increasing with air gap.
