A spark to me need to hit something. If it is not then I would call it a corona discharge. But I like number 1. it works for me. I did the Arc Flash training when I was working as a maintenance supervisor for Coca-Cola.

In the Colorado Springs Notes, Tesla refers to them as ”streamers”. In some
instances he would say "brush like discharges” (which I assume was aimed at
smaller discharges).
