I used to work in a machine shop using line shaft machine drives and corresponding belts to the shafts in the ceiling. The main drive was a big induction motor connected to the shafts through a 6 inch belt. There was a protective hardware cloth cage over the big pulley on the line shaft end and in dry weather it would give 2 inch sparks to a nearby water pipe feeding the sprinkler system. Sort of a primitive VDG. I don't know if it would have given longer sparks if the pipe were farther away because the cage was just mounted to wooden beams with no low leakage insulation.

The Kelvin water dropper is another electrostatic charger. _______________________________________________ Tesla mailing list Tesla@xxxxxxxxxx http://www.pupman.com/mailman/listinfo/tesla
