Re: [TCML] Utility Meters

The initial setup was a surprising expense for me. The utility company required a disconnect at the bottom of the pole and a 240V 400 amp is not standard stock. I have a 3 phase , fused disconnect but only use two legs and two 400 amp fuses then run 200 amp line to the house and 200 to the garage.

Many modern electric meters are of the electronic digital variety these days, whether or not they are the automatic recording type. Even when I came through firefighter training school some 25 years ago, there were still certain types of meters that critical customers (say a hospital) would have where the power was NOT automatically cut by removing the meter. We were trained to certainly be able to detect these type of meters (it was only by the first 2 digits of the serial number, IIRC) since the typical way that firefighters remove externally fed electrical power from a burning building is by pulling the meter.

My meter is independent of the transmission wires but then I have my own 400 Amp transformer on the pole in my yard so I guess they don’t make a 400 A meter. If you remove my meter it has no effect on the incoming power.

The meter plugs into the distribution panel - when it is removed the power to the house is cut off.
