Re: [TCML] Re: Coil Died
Huh? Readily available? Although I may have personally found pole pigs a little
out of reach back in the 80's and 90's, they certainly were just as accessible back
then as now, if not more so. T&R Electric was still readily selling their transformers
to the general coiling community, now they won't. And all of the MOTs that were
gutted from microwave ovens were still "real transformer" iron core units, as op-
posed to the SS inverters in newer model microwaves. BTW, iron cored NSTs
are becoming increasingly scarce, due to the influx os SS drivers in the newer units.
I also paralleled multiple NSTs for more ambitious coil projects before I finally per-
sonally located a semi-local source for pole pigs. I always considered MOTs, at
least as single units, just too low on the voltage for reliable quenched SG firing but
was able to locate them pretty easily "back in the day". Once I got a reliable ballast
setup to run a non-current limited transformer on and acquired a few pigs and/or PTs,
I could no longer justify the reward vs. effort factor for even fooling with NSTs, OBITs
(or MOTs, either) any longer.

Hi David
These techniques were done before MOTs and Pole Pigs became readily
available.
By submerging the de-potted NST in mineral oil, you could run them at a
higher voltage (up to 160) and get more power. People would also parallel
them for more current.
