I blew one up once with air with an idea to using it covered with Alu foil, but it wasn't particularly uniform in shape. So I presume you would get the same misshapen result if using it as a mould. Also the pressure to get it inflated may be too much for foam?
Someone on the web has used them though, I'm sure I've seen them. Dr Peter T in Australia comes to mind for some reason.

I'm sure it has been mentioned before, but why not use a vehicle inner tube as a mould. The only disadvantage that I can see is after you have cut off the tube, you would need to glue in a centre disc which wouldn't be as strong as in Phil's design
