Re: [TCML] Isolating Transformer

Brian, what do you do with the output earthing? Do you use MOV's or other filters. I have a 1kW isolating transformer. The only time I have used it live was for a briefcase coil (1/2 low power NST for 3 inch sparks). Interfered with the PA some distance away big time. I used a counterpoise plus mains earth.

Michael,

When we do professional gigs we try and always use an isolation transformer and when we can we configure it as a 2:1 step down transformer (ie 480vac to 240vac).

2a isn't much power. That's only 480w. I wouldn't be too concerned at this power level but better safe than sorry.

I just remembered that I have an old 1:1 isolating transformer, which may
be of use for my TC. It's a chunky and heavy unit so it's gotta be a
traditional transformer. Have these units been used before in TCs? I have
already purchased a mains line filter, so I would probably have the line
filter across the mains socket, followed by this isolating transformer to
add further protection. The specs of it are:

750VA
50Hz
240V primary, 240V secondary
3A secondary
Single phase
VEC. GRP. 71 (not sure what this is)

(My NST is likely to draw around 2A - although haven't finished it yet so
can't be sure)

What do we think about this?
