[TCML] Combination HV Kicking Coil with the addition of a small spark gap...
Schematic at the end of the video ? by adding a spark gap to the
self-induction coil circuit some interesting modifications of the output can
be seen.
In particular, the arcs become very hot, thick, and flaming. To the naked
eye they are bright white and interspaced with yellows and oranges. Even
the
brush discharge becomes twisted and spiraling as the additional gap is
opened.
The extra gap when adjusted in small increments means that there is no ?dead
time? in the output?(compared to the ?make? alone where the contacts are
touching).
Though the noise gets annoying after a while to listen to, the subtle
changes in the additional gap can be heard in the output, the ?hit and miss?
sound
of the interrupter sparks has a ?hiss? added to varying degrees as the gap
is opened. For most of the video the gap was open from a few thousandths of
an inch
to around .015? max. The adjustable gap is a simple ¼? tungsten micrometer
gap, as compared to the massive 1.25? diameter interrupter contacts?

For reference, the sparks appear as these to the naked eye (an old test at
4kW with an old WWI quenched gap).

They are different in that they are interspaced with a great abundance of
brush discharge, but the general twisted flaming appearance is definitely
the same, even if the current is less?
