No, you're not too old-fashioned. Not everything that could be done solid-state/digitally should be done solid-state/digitally.
I make sure that there is nothing solid-state or digital within 20 ft of any coil.

Use HV rectifier tubes like 8020 or 705A...none of those solid state
roblems..or am I too old fashion.
