You also have to be careful about spaces vs tabs, particularly at the beginning of a line. It's not always obvious which one your email reader/composer is generating.
Ah for the days when we all had teletypes, glass or otherwise, and none of this fancy proportional spaced fonts or descenders (if you were lucky enough to have lower case).
