Re: [TCML] Ammeter on three phase supply

For give me if I missunderstood I was thinking you were going to put the toridal current transformers in series witl L-1-L-2-L-3. Worked on 3 phase power lines for many years with a sno making crew and if you never have seen a 3phase fire ball blow the top off a pole and set everything left on fire ....well all I can say is that it would help you nurture a healthy respect for electricty.. Binny...True belive it or not I once blew out both my gaffs on an ice covered pole with a live 440 drop. In my struggle to avoid all thr re-rod stickers beneath I gaffed the drop and the only wire the gaff pierced was the ground...Wheww.... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Lux" <jimlux@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>

All,

I have acquired a three-phase 250v alternator that has had its three phase
output split to provide three single phase outlets of 240v each.

If I put the three live wires through a current transformer, would it give a reading of the total current the alternator is giving out? In other words if
each phase has a [say] 10 amp load, will the ammeter read the total
alternator output of 30 amps, or would I need three separate CT's and three
ammeters? (I suspect the latter unfortunately)

The latter.

In theory, if you put all three wires through the same core, it should always read zero (if you don't have a neutral). (just like a GFCI)
