Re: [TCML] RE: Improvements for MOT coil

Hi Etienne,
Before I try and troubleshoot your coil, I would like to point
out my dual MOT experience has been strictly without a doubler, as
such take what I say skeptically... I suspect tuning, not in the
"primary tap" sense, but in the "component value" sense. From what I
can tell, a well tuned coil (AC DC or whatever) will produce sparks
pretty strictly according to power draw, your specks of tank cap to
assumed voltage look OK, assuming you are using a very high break rate
(700-ish is bps.) Given a similar experience with a friend of mine, I
suspect your DC doubler is killing your current draw, being not able
to sustain a full 2x supply voltage, as the coil eats the energy up
(possibly due to ESR of doubler caps or insufficient doubler cap
value, or maybe doubler caps are dumping as spark gap fires due to
insufficient charging resistor or whatever they use, meaning they
never reach 2x.) Try running the coil off of raw ac (which is how I
do it with two MOTs and get 60+ inches (5 feet, and my record
measurable strike is 69 inches)) this will for sure tell you if the
doubler is killing your performance, note however that for only 4 kV
AC your tank cap is tiny, and your ideal break rate will be in the
high loss end of the spectrum 1400-1800 BPS. All this is assuming you
are using no ballast aside from the doubler. So questions, what are
you doing for ballasting, what are the specks of your doubler, and
what are the bps limitations of your spark gap? Other coil specs as
well, but I suspect they are not an issue here, a good top load won't
help much if your power draw is insufficient... At the end of the
day, once you figure out your real power consumption, you can find the
limiting factors using Java TC, whether that be cap size, bps or
whatever, but I suspect your performance is lost in not drawing as
much power as you think, or burning it in a lossy doubler. Again, be
skeptical, I've never worked with a doubler and see no need to...
