Re: [TCML] NST and HV Cables

Haha, Thanks for the clarification, Phil. Yep, that word
has the same meaning here on this side of the big pond, too.
BTW, just from the photos on their website, those trans-
formers look a whole lot like the solid state variety, which
would red flag their eligibility for SG Tesla coil duty. Even
here in the USA, the solid state HV power supplies are
replacing the old style 60 Hz driven, non-GFI'd transformers
for neon sign duty and the old style iron core units are becom-
ing increasing difficult to find, although they are still showing up
on eBay.

David,
Every time I wrote FART I smiled myself. It is the [unfortunate] name of the Italien company that produces them. I wasn't sure if fart meant the same in
the USA - obviously it does.

Hi Phil, all,

I must have missed some part of this conversation but could someone please
tell me what a "FART" is? I didn't know there were NSTs of the flatulent
variety. ;^)

Hi,
I have used a 10Kv 100mA Fart with it's GFI disabled and protected with a
Terry filter to great effect. A word of warning, I destroyed an earlier
identical (new) transformer by flicking it on and off at max voltage across
a spark gap with nothing else connected so beware back EMF effects.

Binny wrote "curious how you came up with the 10KV value. Looking at the
nameplate under KV I see 3,75-3,75 and that leads me to believe it is a
7,500 volt 60 MA output not 10/60. "

Bimmy: Pour yourself a drink, sit down and relax, and re-read my post again,

Rixong: Yes it appears to be a heavy iron type even though it looks like a
new type electronic one. The trouble though is that the sensors for earth
leakage and open-circuit protection will cause problems. Now, if you can
actually disconnect them it would be ok, but a lot that look like that have the parts buried inside the resin, the FART one you have fortunately didn't.

Later resin filled ones without the protection circuitry, could be better in
some respects, as a modern resin would be better than old fashioned tar of
course, which may have voids in it. Tar is also
probably a worse insulator
than modern resin.
I used four 10Kv FARTS the same as yours in parallel for quite a while
before getting a pig.
