I get what you are saying that it is difficult to get tight coupling in TCs without incurring problems with inter-winding insulation and consequent arcing, but could this not be helped by connecting the primary and secondary windings together to form an autotransformer as in the Oudin coil. Would this not allow for tighter coupling as the primary and secondary windings would be linked electrically as well as magnetically and -because of the electrical connection- there would be no high-voltage gradient between the top turn of the primary and the adjacent part of the secondary?
