I actually did this.  I didn't use aluminum tape, though.  I soldered the two ends of the tubing together after connecting them internally with copper.
No ill effects whatsoever.

I am actually now using a top load made of hoops of rigid copper pipe.  I had to solder pieces of pipe together to do it, because the 10' sections weren't long enough to approximate a 12"x48" toroid.
No ill effects.  Of course, I made sure the connections were physically smooth with no sharp edges.
