Yes, I would definitely agree, make sure its rated at 14400/24900
volts on the HV side, not something lower, like 7200/12470 volts
(BTW, the lower of the two slashed voltages is what you're going
to be getting). 7200 volts is a bit on the low side and will require
such critical  spacing of the SG contacts that the SG's ability (or
lack thereof) to quench starts to become a real issue in high
powered coil systems, not to mention increased danger of electrode
crash in a rotary gap system.

As for the kVA rating, I would definitley say go for a 10 or a 15 kVA
unit. 25 kVA may tend to be a bit overkill, as you can easily run a pole
pig at 2 to 3X its nameplate kVA rating for relatively short, low duty
cycle runs in Tesla coil service. I would definitely go bigger than a 5
kVA unit, though, so you'll have room to "grow" ;^)

Okay, I am supposed to be getting a pole pig form one of our subcontractors 
who
does electrical work. He says he has some even 15 and 25kVA units. I want a
5kVA (I think) or maybe 10kVA unit.


If I can go to his yard and test them out before selecting one, what advice
would those on the list give? Sure, a bigger tranny gives room to expand, 
but
the bigger it is, the heavier it is and the more room it takes up. And you 
soon
reach the limit of your electrical service to supply more juice! Thanks.
