You don´t need a pot in parallel with the phase lead inductor.

What you _do_ need is a means to independently delay both rising and
falling edge of the resulting waveform from the PL inductor. Take a look
at the Predikter schematic, the original source of a solution to this
kind of problem.
It is well documented in the Thumper thread over at 4hv.org
