Basically no. Tesla coil arcs a lot more powerful then many people think. An arc will just eat that paint off of whatever you try and put it on. You need something at least as heavy as window screen. Even window screen has it's limits, as Steve Caton and my self used the stuff as socks at one point with our chain mail suit and now I have a nice little RF burn on the bottom of my foot because of it.

If you want to be "safe" and do this right you have to be willing to spend some real money to buy the proper stuff. Keep it heavy gauge, this is not something you want to go cheap on, because if it fails it's your life at stake not just a part in a coil.
