My high school science gang built a bipolar TC that worked well. The secondary was 11" in dia and 48" long. The Pri was 24" dia and 8" long. We grounded the center tap. We didn't use any toroids on the coil ends, just used the capacitance of the coil ends themselves. It probably would have worked better with toroid--it certainly would have looked cooler. The pri cap was ten one-gallon glass jars lined with tinfoil inside and out. That made a beautiful discharge around the edges of the foil. I forget what we used for xfmrs, maybe a couple of 15-60s in parallel. It helps is your friend's dad works at a neon sign shop.

If you don't ground the center tap, a ground arc to the end would make it think it's a unipolar TC with the ground at one end and the pri in the middle, at the half-voltage point, and you could get arcs to the primary. We got the design from an old TC book that I wish I could find now.

Shannon, thanks for that comment ....... that does of course make
absolute sense, it's amazing how easy it is to overthink and thereby
overcomplicate such a simple concept. Logic RULES! lol
