It really depends upon how much current is being pushed through the
primary.  On any NST-based coil, I doubt that you'd notice any performance
difference between using reasonable lengths of common #14 copper wire and a
copper ribbon.  I think most of us tend to err on the heavy-overkill side,
just because it looks cooler and won't hurt.  The heavy wire option would
probably being a lot tidier and one could argue less subject to corona.
