Re: [TCML] Fried It !/filtration
Hi all,
With my pig powered system, I've found that I have to install
line filters in several places - one large 150(X3) amp surplus
unit - from an MRI machine, I believe, at the input to the pole
pig, and smaller 20 or 30 amp units elsewhere - one at the in-
put to the ARSG motor, and one at the input of each of the two
cooling fans inside the control panel. As has been pointed out,
I'm sure that these filters do NOT filter out ALL of the back-
lash of RF and EM interferance, but I do know that they are at
least partially effective at reducing this problem because I had
suffered burnt out motors more than once prior to installing the
filters, but have experienced zero burnt motor incidents since in-
stalling the filters. Also, the large filter must be at least partially
effective as well at keeping the backfeeding transients from get-
ting back into my home's wiring. I am forced to operate my 12
foot spark spouting coil outdoors away from my garage and
house for obvioous reasons and this 35 to 40 ft. spacing, in ad-
dition to the filtering, has eliminated further "electronics going
haywire" in my home for me. Of course, the RF grounding is
set really close to where I operate the coil, too. The only ill
effect that I now still notice is that the electronic ballasted flo-
rescent lights in my garage do go out while I am firing the coil
and promptly light back up when I stop firing. If that's the
"worst" artifact of my coiling, I can live with that ;^) YMMV.

Personally, I believe any leakage of RF or EMI around a filter would
not be significant to distroy any device that is properly grounded.
Belief has its place: the issue here is physics. Some of the
'noise' energy is lost in the filter. SOME of it sees the
filter as an 'impedance discontinuity', reflects, keeps going
and radiates. Whether the resultant 'bypass' is 'destructive'
depends on the energy levels of the source, and how 'fragile'
the victim electronics are, in addition to shielding and
filtering.
