Re: [TCML] Detuned or Dentured?
Miles,
I'm not sure what you mean about the coil being detuned. If you have fewer
secondary turns than you expected, then you'll simply tap the primary using
fewer turns. If secondary has 10% less turns, then you'll tap the primary
at 10% fewer turns. For example if you planned on tapping at turn 12 on
the primary, then you'd tune at turn 11 or so instead. If you do this, then
the coil will still be in tune. There will be no problem. The extra turns on the
primary are just left open and have no effect. (If there are a *great* number
of unused turns, that can sometimes cause a problem.)
Possibly I'm misunderstanding your question.
John

Yep, hey Miles. Wish I was home more but if you're anywhere near Odessa,TX this
week we could do lunch. Do hope we meet soon.
Forget the dentured term; have no idea where I got that from my notes. But I do
have a big concern with the percent detuned my coil appears in JavaTC. Any
suggestions?
Best Regards,
Miles

Hey Bart!
There are two Miles's on the list now. We are both in Atlanta too. I have not
yet had the pleasure of meeting him.

Hi Miles,
What do you mean by the term "denture"?

I found the post below of interest as I had to recalculate my design
due to only having a 20" secondary winding instead of 22".
Unfortunately, I already had the primary built along with the topload.
Originally I had a computed denture of 4.21% high, but now the best I
can compute is in the low 50% range. Is this "detuned"? Or an awful
denture that I should consider starting over?

Hi Brandon,
For what it's worth, I run my coil in my garage or driveway. It's only
0.9KW input power, so much less output power, though I don't know
exactly how much less or how to measure it. As long as I don't run it
in some sort of awful detuned mode, I have zero interference with
household electronics.
