For small Tesla coil projects, the bottom of the toroid is not normally
seen or viewed because the coil sits low on a table.  This allows for
making the bottom of the toroid "open".  The metal wraps smoothly 
around the edge to the bottom.  The result is that the toroid behaves 
as a regular full toroid, regarding spark production behavior.  

Spun aluminum toroids are the gold standard for the ultimate in topload
