Re: [TCML] CRT wire - harvesting safely

I have salvaged wire from CRTs and TVs. With patience you can crack the wire wrapping into its constituent pieces and never damage the CRT itself. The wire is loaded with glue/shellac though. Microwave fan wire is much easier to reuse.

Hi Brian,

On older b/w sets, we used to hammer a screwdriver into the end of the
electron gun. This may be harder now as the necks are thinner. You probably can remove the focus clamp etc and then the yoke if you are careful. In any
case, be sure to wear goggles or better yet a safety shield.
I did this with a PC monitor recently as I scrap out copper. I was surprised
that the yoke was wound with two sizes of Litz wire and was easily unwound
:-)I won't be scraping that out!

Careful is essential like most of the hazards we deal with. Anyone with
current vacuum equalization experience please chime in for my benefit too.

I managed to get the CRT out of a little old portable TV, with a 4 by 5 inch screen, and it has lots of lovely copper wire that I want to get out and use for a secondary coil. I know these tubes are under a vaccum of sorts and I will have to melt off a bit of glue and bend off some posts with pliers, so
should I pop the tail end of the tube before I start trying to extract the
wire? If so what is the safest way to pop a tube or otherwise get at that
wire?
