Re: [TCML] Off grid, medium size, 12V battery powered TC

Steve,

Switching the battery connections is too much work, especially when building and testing. I have generators, but I'm still concerned about using them for TC work.

What voltages do I need for a DRSSTC? I could come up with some other bartteries dedicated to TC work.

Bria, I've done ignition coils, but I'm looking for a coil that can throw 2' sparks or so, AFAIK, you can't get that out of them, more like a brush discharge.

I was hoping that in these days of SS coils there is a way to do this.

thanks for the help!

Jonathan,

I think for the short times you will be running your coil, a 2-4 KVA
gasoline, propane or diesel alternator would be a better solution, and
wouldn't cost more than the equivalent beefy inverter plus filters to
protect it. Look around for a used alternator. This keeps you independent
of your expensive off-grid setup.

Another idea would be to reconfigure your battery bank for a higher voltage if you can. Charge them in parallel, and then run them in series to power a
solid state coil, e.g. a DRSSTC configuration.

Please keep us posted on what you end up doing.

Subject: [TCML] Off grid, medium size, 12V battery powered TC

Hi all,

I moved onto my off grid property a while back. I'm itching to play with a
TC, but my power system involves expensive inverters and other control
electronics. What I'm looking for is a way to power a medium powered coil
from a 12V battery bank. I have a 1200aH battery bank to play with, so I
have plenty of power available. I have a 6" by 48" secondary handy, or I
could wrap somehting smaller. I'd be happy with 2' streamers.

Any leads on such a coil?

Jonathan
