If building a Tesla coil just to make sparks isn't stupid, then neither is
pushing a motor (to make sparks AND smoke) to a spectacular end.  That it
continued to run with incandescent brushes was amazing!

Yes, I suspect that washing machine motors on this side of the pond all use
induction motors, but haven't been able to observe enough appliances to say
that with authority.

That the synchronous washing machine motors that require water are
unsuitable seems a terrible waste, and would have guessed that it would be
easier to adapt that to dry-use than a universal motor.
