Hi Ron.

Do you know the frequency of the discharge of these stun guns?  If they
just use DC voltage doubler or tripler circuits, you can measure the
distance of the discharge between spheres of a known diameter or points.
There are tables of voltage/distance available on the net and maybe even
the archives.  However you cannot use such tables on high frequency
discharges.  For a given voltage, these discharges can go significantly
further than a DC discharge.  

There is also a high voltage forum, 4hv.org with a lot of high voltage
experts on it. You could possibly subscribe to it for a little while.  The
time and effort involved in that would probably be far smaller than normal
web research. :-)
