please read the article to which I referred you. AC is the WRONG answer.
The reverse EMF on a kettering ignition is typically about 250V on the
primary, I used 450 for my particular CD ignition - that gets a several inch
long spark off a 6V coil. Remember, the exictation voltage is irrelevant,
it's the voltage rise when the points open that is what does the work - or
if you prefer, the collapsling magnetic field. AC will just burn out the
ignition coil

Well I just tried the 16v AC into my 12v coil. I didn't get much out bar a
slight crackle as I moved the wire close to the negative terminal. I guess I
need to do something different. That was in no way enough to light up a
spark plug!
