Re: [TCML] Latest TC results, and one strange one....
Peter,
...and if you want to keep the toroid at its present height, you can add a smaller
toroid below the bowl, right on top of the secondary to kill the corona at that
point. This smaller toroid will behave as a corona ring (anti-corona ring actually).
Nice output spark action on your coil by the way.
This smaller toroid should be larger in diameter than the secondary coil like this:
___________
(___________) -- toroid
| |
| |
| | -- secondary

Cheers,
John

Peter -
It looks like your "mystery spark" is just a streamer that happened to originate from some feature near the top of the secondary coilform, rather than from the toroid itself.
If you watch the video clip carefully, you can see corona and multiple small streamers originating from this location. I can't clearly see the "inverted bowls", but is there a metal flange or a sharp edge of some sort at this location?
I think there are two factors contributing to your "mystery streamer":
1. There is a sharp edge or point near the top of your secondary that is causing a high field gradient;
2. Your toroid is positioned too high above the top of the secondary, and is not providing adequate electrostatic shielding of the top of the secondary.
Your pair of deep bowls may just be too tall for the toroid diameter you are using. It looks like the secondary may be 12" - 15" above the top of the secondary; you might want to reduce this to 6" - 8".
Regards,
Herr Zapp

Two things - first is the latest results of my ever-modifying TC. Second thing is a mystery spark I'd ask you all to take a peak at and see what it could be?
Firsy, here is the latest TC with an 18 inch toroid, fit nicely over an inverted metal deep bowl, and that on top of another/identical bowl, as seen here. Running at between 11.5 and 11.75 turns of the primary. Power supply is 12kV 60mA through terry filter, and secondary is a 4" x 18" with about 1020 turns of 25 awg. Vacuum quentioned copper tube gap with 4 series by 2 parallel. Longest streamers are 30" sometimes 35" streamers.
