RE: [TCML] "NST" is there a better way

Hi Travis,

It may be wise to clearly emphasize the difference between an easily
available microwave transformer (MOT) and a oil-burner ignition transformer
(OBIT). The former has the ability to easily electrocute as it is ~2200V @
~.5amps. The oil burner is 10kv @ 23ma generally, and more suited for a new
experimenter. This too can be dangerous depending on the connection to the
body; but, at least there is maybe a second chance. Let's remember 10ma can
kill. MOT's are like mini pole pigs.

It would be instructive to know the statistics of mortal accidents with
these as they are so easy to find, and don't look too dangerous.

Mitch,

There are usually lots of Oil Burner ignition transformers on Ebay. They are
very suitable for small, starter coils. Contact me off list if you can't
find one.

Call some local sign shops and ask if they have any old ones they might sell
you. Even units with one output not working could be salvageable for you. I
was able to get 15Kv/60mA NSTs for about $20/ea by doing that. That way, you
avoid the expensive shipping costs. Transformers are big masses of iron and
copper. They are just going to be heavy and expensive to ship. Other options
are transformers from microwave ovens and oil burners. They tend to produce
less power and can be harder to use than the NST though.

Avoid the newer "solid state" units. They won't work on a coil. GFCI is also
is a problem from what I've read on the list.

"better" won't be cheaper. To get better, you go to pole pigs. :) As you're
new, I don't recommend that option.
