Re: [TCML] JAVATC - Question

Thanks Jim.? To clarify, I was planning to use a vacuum cleaner motor - the air output side - for a blown style gap.?

I had considered using brass dowels like you describe.? Can you give me a little more info on how you mounted them, adjustability, connections, etc.? I'm trying to see if this would be within my somewhat limited machining capability.? Thx, Dennsi

Hi,
It seems to me that hyperbaric, curved gaps have some complicated
aerodynamic physics.

As the compressed air enters the gaps it will accelerate across the closer
faces increasing the pressure/velocity. The exiting air which is also loaded
with heated ions is creating a vacuum at the edges due to the Bernoulli
effect which may cause some ions to remain and swirl at the edges thereby
reducing the quenching.

However, gaps with compressed air blown through a hole in the gap face
reportedly work well. This is also the way a vacuum gap is often set up. You
didn't say if you intend to blow the gap or use suction which seems to me
would have very different physics.

My 15/120 neon gap is two flat faced 1" brass dowels and is blown by
compressed air. I am certain what ever exits the other side is outta here

Subject: [TCML] JAVATC - Question

Bart or anyone, I have a question on the Static Gap Design input.? I am
considering a single gap design using 2 knobs from cabinet doors or
drawers.? The diameter accross the face of the knobs is 1.25".

First, should I input "round" or?"flat" for Electrode Geometry?? I always
assumed round was used for copper pipe electrodes only, but now I'm not
sure.? The face?of the knobs where the spark would?occure is rounded/convex
- seems like I should input 'round.'?

Second, how should I determine the Electrode Diameter I need to input?? Is
is the diameter measured?across the face of the knob?? Or is it some
calculation of diameter based on the radius of curvature of the rounded face
of the knob?? The former would be 1.25", but the latter would be
considerably larger.

Thanks for your help - Dennis Hopkinton MA
