RE: [TCML] Sangamo Mica verses MMC poly verses TDK ceramics (not filter grade) in VTTC, also voltage doublers

Hi All,

I have several TDK caps 2000pf 40KV caps that may cut the deal. I can't find
specs on current but they do drift with temp changes from the spec pages. I
have (100) .0082 Panasonics 2KV ECW-H for an MMC 16x (6) 2.5 amps x 6 ~
15amps, .003 . I have found a source for Sangamo mica pulls after hours of
searching. (4) for 16kv @ .003uf So what to do???

What is the advantage of this voltage doubler verses the standard level
shifter? There is a way to get FW 120 PPS but that seems to be a bad idea.

Here's my best shot at an ascii drawing...

)-----| |--|--->|--|--O +out ~2xV
           | |
Vin --- ---
           ^ ---
           | |
           | |
)---------------------O
                      |
                     ----
                      --

I think this is still 60 PPS, few offer waveforms but it is called "half
wave". ***I want my SCR to shut off***. 2 caps and 2 diodes verses one each
most have better current characteristics.

I can run the transformer at 2410v parallel (output) or series 4820v full
wave for modulation fun. Any idea on how to incorporate fiber into the
staccato for audio fun? I guess it will buzz pretty loud without CW
operation. I could wire for 4820 and half wave rectify it - easy remote HV
full wave switch over though it is 2 amps or more... So many variables!

Thanks, Jim Mora

Hi Jim,

For my 36" spark VTTC, I used RF mica caps rated at 8kV, but
I always used them in series for a 16kV rating . Meanwhile the
transformer
voltage was about 5kV to 6kV. There's resonant rise in the tank,
so that has to be allowed for. I had no failures set up this way.
One time when I tried using a single mica at 8kV rating, it failed
rather quickly (within a few seconds).

Cheers,
John

Hi All,

I am scavenging parts for my (4x) 833c 6" coil. I am trying to keep the
freq
at ~ 350khz. That requires a .003uf or slightly less in my design. I
have on
hand a Sangamo type G2 (3.125" diameter x 3" high)(dual oval aluminum
end
plates) @ .003uf, 12amps, @ 8kv PWKG voltage. Will this stand up to this
abuse? Sangamo's are getting hard to find.
I wish I had bought 4 several years ago to stack and parallel!

Thanks,

Jim Mora
