[TCML] KBIC controller protection for DC motor rotary gap

HI List,

I am bringing up a new controller cabinet. It will be capable of 16.8kw if I
stack a second 1256D variac (8400KVA max ea) in the cabinet and acquire
another pig. Current control is via a saturable reactor salvaged from a
scrapped science oven. This will power a 12" coil via a 5KVA/240 18KV GE
epoxie PT in a separate transformer cabinet. On to the point.

I want to try protecting the motor controller rather than using a bridge and
variac as some have had to resort to from smoked controllers. I plan to
leave the cabinet from the Kbic through 2 legs of a 3p 40 amp EMI filter
(the schematic path is through inductors and caps are used only as bypass so
I assume it is PW capable at target frequencies). The manufacturer
recommends using shielded cable which I will try. And lastly a reactor which
I also have to sooth the ragged waveforms on the motor lines and step in in
case of motor failure to give the controller a chance to shut down.

I have read lots of threads. re; DC motor controllers failures and TC's. I
would like to hear any success stories and methods. I really like the motor
control from the Kbic and a 5K pot on the front panel!

This will be my 12" disk which is somewhat limited but will be a good test
gap. Someone stole my new Baldor IGBT rated 3p 3hp motor :-( for my VFD and
18" 5/8" G10 disk,(both gaps to be asynchronous).
