Re: [TCML] stuck at 36"

Hi John,

Yes, an MMC of large C usually get expensive, but your low voltage helps keeps the number of caps needed pretty low considering. The caps we all love to use are Cornell Dubilier 942C series (p/n 942C20P15K). Each cap is 0.15uF 2000V. I'm not sure what they sell for these days, but our own Dr. Resonance often has them in stock (Resonance Research Corporation).

You can of course use other caps out there, but there have been both good and bad experiences. Never (ever) trust any eBay listing saying that a component is good for Tesla duty (they say that about everything). Before buying anything, always check with the TCML (unless your feeling lucky).

For a 0.045uF cap, you can probably get away with only 10 caps in series (consider this a minimum). 10 caps in series is .015uF and then 3 of these strings connected in parallel will get you 0.045uF rated at 20kV. So, 30 caps total for a minimum string standoff voltage.

It would of course be ideal to run 14 per string (28kV), but to achieve near the desired value, then about 56 caps. If your going to invest in am MMC, you might as well make sure it stays healthy.

I do have a calculator handy for playing with MMC arrangements. There are also spreadsheets floating around.

Thanks everyone for the response.I have tried several things with my spark gap including fewer electrodes, blowing compressed air and adjusting gap width . No apparent improvement. I have a fairly high volocity fan installed should be good.On the note of MMC capsI am a bit confused. There are various ideas on what capacitors should be used .How much $ does it cost to build a cap bank to fit my system?.Can it be built to be used@xxxxx and 12kv or is it one or the other?.Where can I buy the componants and schematic?.I can put it togather but sourcing the parts is a bit confusing.Ebay has many differant types. All claim to be ok for tesla work. That adds to my confusion.I can build another plate cap with 10"x12"x32plates with.060 HDPE for about 45$ It sounds like the MMC would be somthing to consider depending upon cost Any help thankful _______________________________________________
