[TCML] Blast gap for experiment
Hi all,
I have a brass dowel airblast gap that really worked for me. It was a
replica of a Richard Quick's blast gap. He was using a compressor straight
up into the gap. I emailed and asked him what the maximum VA was and he
pegged it at 2KW. They are 1" brass flat faced dowels that I have e-talked
about before.
I used a fire hose like plastic nozzle aimed up at 45 degrees blown by a
high end leaf blower through 2" sewer pipe. You may find a picture of RQ's
original in the archives. Anyway, I would be happy to send in to anyone who
would like to scope it along with the nozzle. I don't have a storage scope.
It is the ultimate in simplicity but it works great once the ripping sound
starts at about 70 volts, and really gets to business at 140V!
I was running dual new Transco 15/60HP so around 1800 watts less power
correction and an 8" coil and a .03uf MMC. I think it could handle much more
power as it rarely got more than warm, especially if it was scaled up. The
1" brass faces need to be subjected to 400 grit from time to time but
assembly/dis is easy as is setting the gap.
