I second that, plus, they are not prone to being damaged to RF like electronics. Further, they were not only for spark gap but widely used in transmitters up to a few years ago.
They will give a true average current.
Just hook it in series with the ground.

Another thought on base current. Thermocouple RF ammeters can be found surplus for only a few bucks and they'd be perfect for measuring RMS base current. That's what guys used to measure antenna current in "the good old days of spark".
