Depends on the coil size. Keep it proportional to the rest of the system. 5/16 is OK for lower power,?2-3 in diam coil @ few hundred watts. Three 2.5 in brass balls ?only needed for multi-KW big coil or opening a very small pawn shop ;^))

Here is a site with various sizes of threaded brass balls. They range in size
from 5/16 " to 2 1/2". What would be an ideal size for the safety gap?
