Phillip,
     Glass is not entirely useless, I used 9nf glass caps on my first 
coil and got around 24-inchers with a lousy 300 turn secondary.  Your 
improvement is probably largely from a change in capacitance value (a 24 
nf glass bottle cap would weigh close to 50 lbs full of water I'd 
guess.)  Still, good to know your stuff is working.
