It's possible to kill an NST with either kind of gap. A static gap that is set too wide will kill the NST. An RSG with either a too small cap value, or failure to turn the motor on or fast enough before powering the NST will also kill it.
For beginners, a static gap is highly recommended, as there are many issues with an RSG that are not obvious to beginners.
