Another easy way to remove the solder would be to use a solder wick, which usually works better for the larger soldered areas, i.e. joining of two or more component leads.

Solder wick is available from electronic supply houses (even Radio Shack) and simply looks like a small roll of copper braid.  Simply place the wick on the joint to be unsoldered and heat the wick, the braid will draw the solder away from the joint leaving nice clean leads which are easily re-soldered into the new configuration.  If you are worried about excessive heat transfer into your components attaching small alligator clips will work as an impromptu heat sink by absorbing heat as it passed along the component lead. 

Although it's a little time consuming you can remove the braid for some scrap pieces of coaxial cable and us it as an alternative to the solder wick and works quite well also.
