Could a contribution to the effect be the thermal heating of the air just 
to the inside of each electrode.  Being super hot the gas pressure would 
be less on the inside than the outside causing the electrode to move 
inward toward the spark, similar to how an airplane wing moves toward the 
lighter air pressure.  This would also support the effect Gary Lau 
recorded when the spark opened at the top.  When the air pressure returns 
it pushes the electrode back.
