The nasty spikes tend to occur at the operating frequency of your coil; and  
yes, they are random. To a 5 usec event, even 5 seconds is a very long  run 
time. For initial tuning, setting your gap and safety gap very  conservatively, 
will probably save your bacon, if you absolutely  cannot wait to finish a 
Terry filter first.
