Hi Ken,Acquire the PT if it's not too much money. The 7200V can be used like all transformers (many have used them with success). Power is a main factor to producing great running coils. With the lower voltage, you will have to adjust the gap(s) accordingly, but even these lower voltage transformers are good if they have high power ratings. People get into trouble when they use 7200V transformers of low power (say 20mA to 30mA), but with a 200mA PT, your sparks will outperform your 12/60 NST easily. Sparks will go from about 25" to 60" with simply the transformer change. So, it's certainly worth it if the price is right.

I hope this isn't too basic a question. I have a 12kV/60mA NST that I will build my first coil with. I'm looking down the road a bit and am trying to decide whether to take advantage of an opportunity at hand. I have a chance now to acquire a GE potential transformer 7200v @ 1.5KVA. I know this has twice the VA capacity of my NST, but what effect will the reduced voltage have on coil performance? I am also aware of the ballasting and added precautions associated with this type of non current limited transformer. Thanks. Ken
