Re: [TCML] Tesla Coil in Beijing: press release

Hey Matt and all...

Being that I had been educated in the Engineering background... ( sure seems elsewise) that a couse or two in technical writing should be included in Journalism Education ( writing) to be able to "understand" what the teller of the story actually means and to convey that info to the general public who may not be up on the terminoligy stated by the original source... does this make sence cause I have no background in journalism ;)

Hi Herr Zapp, All,

It has been my personal experience that, despite talking to the largest paper in my state and being a long-time friend of the Editor, any time one does not give a reporter a printed, mostly monosyllables press release, they will garble anything technical. It is also unsafe to assume that an interviewer will have done any background on the subject. I was surprised to find myself quoted as saying that a Tesla Coil is a type of motor!

Jeff B. (and Jeff P.) -

It just seems, well, hard to believe that an experienced news reporter from a major newspaper (Milwaukee Journal Sentinal) could get so confused, and could end up "fabricating" such a story our of thin air .....without a little "help".

It might be worthwhile to contact the reporter (Sharif Durhams,
sdurhams@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) to get some understanding of who he actually
interviewed, what he was actually told.

(TC content): I certainly was paying close attention to KVA Effect's status reports as construction on the coils progressed, and was really looking forward to seeing them in operation. Think of the huge surge in interest in Tesla coils,
and in Tesla's work, that would h
ave resulted from millions of people seeing
these coils operating at full output.

Herr Zapp

Wisconsin firm makes Tesla coil for Olympics ceremonies

Resonance Research Corp. of Baraboo developed a 40-foot-tall Tesla coil that was used during the opening ceremony. It’s slated for another appearance during the closing ceremony Aug. 24. The device sends tendrils of lightning as long as 100
feet that are generated from two domes. It pops out 20 million volts of
electricity.
Resonance Research has built lasers, Van de Graaff generators, crackle tubes and
other devices for museums for more than four decades.
...
It took about a year to make the $1.3 million device, which was shipped to China by boat two months ago, Cox said. He said he has two staffers at the Games, providing technical assistance. Another contractor has 20 employees there to
help with the set-up.
Wisconsinites can get a closer look at a Tesla device. Discovery World at Pier
Wisconsin has a Tesla coil made by Resonance Research about 22 years ago.
It looks exactly the same as the one in China, just a bit smaller, Cox said.
Just don’t tell the Chinese the device is American-made, he cautioned.
“They kind of want people to assume it’s a local thing,” he said.
