The spark gap extinguishes many times each second

while the coil is running but this can't be seen by eye.

It happens too fast.? 



Using the information you gave, it's impossible to say

if a larger top load will improve the spark length.? To determine

that, we need all the?details about your coil.....? Details such
as; rating of power transformer, rating of capacitor, number
of turns in primary and secondary of the TC, physical sizes
of the coils, type of spark gap and how it's made, and gap?spacings,
size of topload, etc.
