From what I understand joining coil material is a bad idea when dealing with 
high voltage because any imperfections in the solder joint could cause 
arching. I don't think this is as crucial for the primary because the 
voltages are lower but I don't think I would risk it. Definitely a no no 
when it comes to the secondary wire.
